Transformers: Dark of the Moon exploded around the world over the weekend, where it grabbed $210 million internationally, smashing debut records in several territories, according to sources. Starring Shia LaBeouf and Josh Duhamel, Transformers 3 is the second biggest opening of 2011 internationally, after Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Transformers: Dark of the Moon hit the top spot in 57 territories with 70 percent of the tickets from 3D cinemas. In South Korea it brought in $28 million and Hong Kong made $5.2 million, setting opening records. The sci-fi action film also scored the biggest debuts for the Philippines, Singapore and other Asian markets, as well as the United Arab Emirates, Peru and Panama. Transformers 3 is running 51% ahead of the launch of Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, also performing strong in Russia ($22 million), where it had its world premiere. Other big grosses came from the UK with $16.5 million, Australia at $16.1 million, Germany with $14.3 million, Mexico at $11 million, France at $10.9 million and Taiwan with $10.2 million. The robot adventure ranks as the third best-ever worldwide launch, collecting a total of $372 million - not including today, US Independence Day, which could bring in another $18 million. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince still reigns as the first place debut with $394 million, followed by Spider-Man 3 at $382 million. |
